I love college football. My team loyalty is as follows: When I can't Sic Em, I Hook Em. It is through these glasses that I view the history of the sport.
September 5, 1986- A meteor strikes a small farm in New Mexico, catching the attention of a local couple driving down the road. When they investigate they find a small alien spacecraft that had transported the infant Colt McCoy from far away Krypton. The couple quickly recognized his superhuman strength, unfailing character, natural athletic ability, and all around good-guy quality. They immediately take him to Texas and enroll him in football.
2004- McCoy graduates high school in Tuscola, TX where his father is the football coach. He finishes his high school career as the all time leading passer in Texas High School Division 2A history (4th in all divisions). He was also the team's punter and played free safety his sophomore year. Colt and his best friend Jordan Shipley decide to go to the University of Texas- where they become room mates, team mates, and legends.
January 4, 2006- As a redshirt freshman Colt stands on the sidelines and watches one of the greatest football games ever played- orchestrated by one of it's most skillful masters. Vince Young leads the Texas Longhorns to a National Championship in the Rose Bowl over heavy favorite USC and it's two Heisman Trophy winners. Colt watches... and waits... knowing that his time will come.
May 29, 2006- While fishing with his father Colt hears a cry for help. Without hesitation he dives in, swims 300 yards across the lake, and saves the life of Ken Herrington who was having a seizure. On the way home he rescued a kitten from a tree, a toddler from a burning building, and wrote out the solution to healthcare reform on the back of a Yoo-Hoo label. The label was later found and destroyed by the maniacal Bob Stoops, coach of the Oklahoma Sooners.
October 11, 2008- Texas and Colt McCoy defeat #1 ranked Oklahoma in the Red River shootout 45-35.
December 6, 2008- Despite having the same record as Texas and suffering a convincing head to head loss to the Longhorns, the Oklahoma Sooners play for the Big 12 Championship. They win and go on to lose in the National Championship game. The decision to put the Sooners in the championship came after a Congressional Committee in Washington is swayed by promises from Sooner fans of a lifetime supply of hush puppies and a date with Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood.
December 10, 2008- Colt is the runner up for the Heisman Trophy award. The only player to receive more votes was Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who Colt had defeated 45-35.
January 5, 2009- Colt McCoy and the Longhorns defeat Ohio State 24-21 in the Fiesta Bowl. This is McCoy's third straight bowl win.
December 2010- Colt is once again a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, this time beat out by Alabama running back Mark Ingram.
December 5, 2010- Colt wins his 44th game as a starting quarterback- the most in college football history.
January 7, 2010- Colt once again stands in the same spot where he had watched Vince Young win it all. The National Championship Game in the Rose Bowl. This time the ball is in his hands. He has prepared for this day since pop-warner. Dreamed of it. He is ready. Across the field staring back is Heisman winner Mark Ingram.
6:17 PM- The game starts... great defensive stand by Texas... 3 early sacks on the Alabama QB... interception by Texas D on a fake punt... McCoy finally gets the ball... and drives down the field like he was playing a third string JUCO squad... there is no doubt in anyone's mind, Texas is dominating... It is exactly how Colt had imagined it... and then it happened... McCoy takes what appears to be a routine hit, pops up quickly, looks at the sideline, panicked. He can't feel his throwing arm. The air leaves the stadium as Colt jogs to the sideline.
6:28 PM- I put on my gloves (seen above) to keep from eating my hands.
6:32 PM- Mack Brown looks down the sideline at true freshman Garrett Gilbert and says "you're in, skippy"
6:34 PM- Gilbert returns from the locker room with a fresh pair of pants. He runs onto the field, introduces himself to the Longhorn starters, and begins to give the game away to a hungry Alabama defense.
7:40 PM- Colt is in the locker room with his dad, his former coach, who stands 8 feet away. He holds a football. If he can only throw it to his father. He can't. The ball falls to the floor. "Let me try again" he says. The ball hits the floor again. "Again". "Again". "Again". He breaks down. It was not to be.
9:27 PM- The Longhorns have fallen without their hero. A reporter grabs Colt for a postgame interview. He can hardly speak. Finally he musters up the strength for a few words. He congratulates his team for hanging in there and fighting hard. He acknowledges God's Providence. He speaks with courage and grace and character. Colt shows poise even in the midst of a nightmare, he makes his fans proud one last time.
